Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a brown, orange, red, yellowish or gray waxy substance secreted in the ear canal. It actually protects the skin of the ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and provides protection against bacteria, fungi, and water.
Your glands can make more earwax than necessary and it may get hard and block the ear. Common causes are using Q tips, as you can accidentally push the wax deeper, causing a blockage. A build-up of earwax can cause symptoms such as impaired hearing, dizziness, and even ear pain. If you have recently had an ear infection this can also cause a build up of substances in your ears which we can also remove.
Microsuction is the process of removing wax from your ears by using a small suction tube and probe to gently remove any excess wax in the ear. Microsuction is our preferred method of wax removal. All of our audiology professionals undertake microsuction training through accredited training providers.
Ear irrigation is an ear cleansing method that people use to remove a build-up of earwax. We first carry out otoscopy to check your ear is suitable for irrigation, then we flush liquid into the ears at body temperature to flush the earwax out. This is an alternative procedure we have the option of using instead of Micro Suction.
We charge a very competitive rate from £45 for both ears.
Q: What if I do not have any wax, do you still charge?
A: We charge a consultation fee of £10. We still check the health of both ears and a hearing test if required.
Q: Does it hurt?
A: Both Micro Suction and irrigation should be pain free. We are highly trained and pay attention to detail to ensure a smooth and pain free wax removal procedure.
Q: How do I know if I need Wax Removal
A: You will feel a fullness of the ear canal and possibly a reduction in your hearing. Background noise would be reduced significantly.
