Children don’t always know when their hearing is affected, and parents may not notice subtle signs right away. Hearing loss, whether temporary or permanent, can impact speech, language, behaviour, and academic progress.
You may want to consider a hearing test if your child:
We know children can feel nervous during medical appointments. So, we have designed our approach to be fun, stress-free and engaging as possible. Our friendly audiologists take the time to build trust with each child and use interactive methods that feel more like play than a test.
Our paediatric hearing tests are carefully chosen based on your child’s age, development, and ability to cooperate. Here’s how we make hearing testing engaging, non-invasive, and effective:
Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA)
This test uses sound and visual rewards to encourage your child to respond to noises. Sounds are played through speakers or headphones, and when your child turns toward the sound, they’re rewarded with an animated toy or flashing light. This helps determine the softest sound they can hear at different pitches.
Play Audiometry
For preschoolers, hearing testing becomes a game! Your child is taught to perform a simple task (like putting a block in a bucket) every time they hear a sound. This keeps them engaged while allowing us to measure their hearing thresholds accurately.
Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)
This is similar to adult hearing tests. Your child listens through headphones/bone vibrator and presses a button or raises their hand when they hear a beep. It gives a detailed profile of their hearing levels across various frequencies and helps us identify the degree and type of hearing loss.
Tympanometry
This test checks the health of the middle ear and eardrum. It’s quick and painless. We simply place a small, soft tip in the ear canal and change the air pressure slightly. Tympanometry helps detect fluid behind the eardrum (like glue ear), Eustachian tube dysfunction, or perforations.
Speech Tests
We assess how well your child can understand speech, both in quiet and noisy environments. This is especially helpful if hearing levels are borderline or if your child struggles with understanding in classroom settings.
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) Testing
Some children hear well but struggle to understand sounds, especially in noisy places. APD testing looks at how your child’s brain processes what it hears. This specialized assessment is designed for school-aged children and helps identify challenges that may affect listening, learning, memory and attention.
Oto-Acoustic Emissions (OAE)
This test checks how well the inner ear (cochlea) is working. It is commonly used in newborn hearing screening and in young children. A small probe is placed in the ear canal, emitting soft sounds and recording the echoes (emissions) that are naturally produced by a healthy cochlea. If emissions are present, it usually means the inner ear is functioning properly. If absent, further testing may be needed to evaluate hearing. It is fast, gentle, and requires no active participation from the child.
Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
This test measures how the hearing nerve and brain pathways respond to sound. It is especially useful for infants or young children who cannot respond to traditional hearing tests. Small electrodes are placed on your child’s head and ears while they are asleep or resting quietly. Soft clicking sounds are played through earphones, and the electrodes record how the auditory system responds. ABR helps determine whether sound is reaching the brain and can identify possible hearing loss or neural pathway issues. ABR is completely safe, painless, and non-invasive.
We understand how important your child’s well-being is. After testing, we’ll explain the results clearly and support you with next steps, whether that’s monitoring, further referrals, or exploring hearing solutions like hearing aids or ENT consultations. With the right support, your child can thrive. Let us help ensure they’re hearing the world as they should be full of sound, connection, and possibility.
Early diagnosis leads to early support and better outcomes. If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing, don’t wait. We’re here to help with expertise, and a commitment to your child’s well-being.
